A Revolution in Thought
How we define the world, defines how we can interact with it.
Newtonian physics, the physics that our modern society is based on, defines energy as the ability to do work. Quantum physics defines energy as the underlying and all-pervasive field of information. Why is this important?
Energy is inherently valuable. We know this because we can feel when we are out of energy and when we have lots of it. Life seems to move smoother when you have more energy. Energy outside of the body is valuable as well, that’s why we pay an electricity bill. How we define energy informs what we determine is valuable.
Physics is the study of the natural world and how it works. What we know of physics immensely affects how we relate to our bodies and our inner workings. Newtonian physics defines energy as the ability to do work. When we live in Newtonian physics perspective, we place value on the ability to do work, meaning how productive we are. Sound familiar? Newtonian physics and capitalism go hand in hand because they both place value on the capacity for achievement. From both, we have learned how to maximize our efficiency, (usually) at the cost of our wellbeing.
Quantum physics takes on a different view. It defines energy as the underlying and all-pervasive field of information that organizes and informs the structure of physical matter. When we step into this perspective, we start to place value on the ability to access and affect this information. Value is placed on learning and the ability to tune in and listen. This changes our relationship to our bodies from seeing them as machines that need fuel to work, to seeing them as places of learning and experience. Through this revolution in thought, life becomes more about learning from experiences and letting that information guide you, making the work easier.
This switch in perspective, in thought process, is truly a revolution because our relationship to physics is the foundation of our relationship to our bodies and the Earth. Ceasing to see our bodies as vehicles made for accomplishment allows for creativity and expression to blossom. Instead of exploiting and damaging the Earth to do more work, we can learn from her and lean into her natural wisdom to live with more ease.
There is a balance to be found between both these perspectives. It is necessary to understand Newtonian physics and Quantum physics in order to navigate this world. To water your inner thought garden, I propose these questions for pondering
How do I relate to my body? The Earth?
What do I place value on?
What can I learn from my body today?
As we shift our relationship to the world, the world itself shifts to meet us.
